How to Find Your CVV Number on Any Credit Card – You might not think it’s important to know the CVV number, but it could be your best defense against credit card fraud. The CVV card number, also known as the card verification value, helps ensure that whoever’s using your credit card has physical possession of the card by requiring the three-digit security code on the back.

That way, even if someone steals your credit card information and purchases something online, they won’t be able to use your card in person without this code.

What is the CVV Card Number?

According to the experts at SoFi, a CVV number is a three or four-digit code typically printed on your credit card’s front or back. This number is an extra security measure when online or over-the-phone purchases.

To find your credit card’s CVV number, look for the three-digit code on the back of your card, next to your signature. If you have a Visa, Mastercard, or Discover card, you’ll also see a four-digit code above the number on the front of your card.

History

In 1995, American Express introduced its Account Information Code System for security and fraud prevention purposes. To comply with this system, they required their merchants to validate the customer’s secret 4-digit PIN by reading it from the signature panel on the card.

Soon after this introduction, Visa and MasterCard followed suit by requiring all merchants to validate either the three-digit or four-digit PIN.

Why Do We Need It, and Why Do Credit Card Companies Ask for It

When you make an online purchase and enter your credit card number, the merchant may ask for your CVV number. The merchant will use it to verify that you are the authorized user of the card.

Different types of CVV codes include:

  1. The three-digit code found on the back of most cards is typically in the signature panel.

  2. The four-digit code is also typically found in the signature panel.

  3. The four-digit code printed directly onto the card usually sits next to or under your account number.

  4. The six-digit code printed directly onto the card usually sits next to or under your account number.

Websites try to make sure that their information is secure to protect their customers from fraud. If someone steals your credit card information, they need your credit card number, expiration date, and CVV number to steal money from your account.

How to Find your CVV Number

There are other ways to find your card’s security code, such as looking at the back of the card for your address or phone number. Contact your credit card company and ask them if you can’t find your credit card’s security code anywhere.

Another option is to call the customer service number for that particular credit card and ask for their assistance in identifying it. It may also be noted on a recent billing statement or in an email from the issuer.

The CVV number is a security feature for the card and does not present transactions, such as online shopping. For your safety, it’s important to know where to find your CVV number and how to keep it safe.
